Sensory Justice Join the Movement

A patient-led advocacy platform

Healthcare wasn't designed for every nervous system.

Neurodivergent people deserve more than "reasonable adjustments" that exist on paper but fail in practice. They deserve sensory justice — healthcare designed for every nervous system, not just the neurotypical one.

Email-based. No phone calls. No pressure.

The Problem

"Reasonable adjustments" aren't reasonable if they don't actually happen.

The Equality Act says healthcare providers must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, including neurodivergent people. The law exists. The delivery doesn't.

A 2025 study confirmed that reasonable adjustments "do not guarantee fair access to healthcare for those with disabilities and cancer." The legal floor is there. But a floor isn't a standard.

Meanwhile, neurodivergent patients are left to navigate environments that were never designed for them — chemotherapy bays with fluorescent lights and constant noise, radiotherapy suites where you're alone in a room with a machine, waiting rooms with no quiet space, at-home drains with rotating practitioners who've never been told you process the world differently.

No patient-led, campaigning platform exists in the UK to change this.

Until now.

The Reframe

Accommodation is a favour.
Justice is a right.

Sensory justice is the principle that healthcare environments must be designed for every nervous system — not just the neurotypical one. It reframes the conversation from "special treatment" to systemic fairness.

It says: the problem isn't that you're sensitive. The problem is that the system wasn't built with you in mind. And that's the system's job to fix — not yours to endure.

This is more than awareness. This is a movement with a method, a voice, and a plan.

The Manifesto

What we believe

01 — Justice, not accommodation

Neurodivergent people aren't asking for favours. They're demanding that healthcare environments work for every nervous system. "Reasonable adjustments" is the legal floor. Sensory justice is the standard.

02 — Lived experience is authority

This isn't theory. It isn't opinion. It's lived reality — cancer treatment as a neurodivergent person — structured into a framework. No institution, course, or competitor can replicate this authority.

03 — The method, not just the message

We don't just name the problem. The SOFT™ Framework shows how to fix it — Stabilise, Orient, Frame, Transition. A structured, evidence-based methodology practitioners can implement and patients can use.

04 — Cancer as the proving ground

Cancer treatment is the most sensory-hostile, highest-stakes healthcare environment. If we achieve sensory justice in cancer care, we can achieve it anywhere. Start narrow and deep. Prove it works. Then expand.

05 — Tools, not just talk

Everything we produce must be usable. Not awareness — tools. Not theory — practice. Not academic — accessible. If a neurodivergent person or a practitioner can't use it within five minutes of finding it, it hasn't done its job.

The Method

The SOFT™ Framework

Sensory Justice campaigns for what should change. The SOFT™ Framework shows how to deliver it. This is the difference between complaining and leading.

S

Stabilise

Establish sensory safety before anything else. The nervous system needs to feel regulated before healing can begin.

O

Orient

Help the patient understand what's happening, what's coming, and what to expect — in a way their nervous system can process.

F

Frame

Give the experience context and meaning. Sensory input becomes manageable when it's framed within a narrative the patient can hold.

T

Transition

Support the journey through and out of treatment. Transitions — between rooms, practitioners, phases — are where sensory breakdown happens.

The Authority

This isn't theory. This is lived reality.

Annette Friar is a neurodivergent aromatherapist and the founder of Burnt Orchid Organics. She's a member of the Aromatherapy Trade Council and the Complementary Medical Association.

She's also a cancer survivor.

During treatment, she navigated chemotherapy bays filled with fluorescent light and the constant sound of infusion pumps. She sat alone in radiotherapy suites. She had drains at home with rotating practitioners who were never told she processes the world differently. She experienced firsthand what it means to be neurodivergent in a healthcare system designed for neurotypical bodies.

She built the SOFT™ Framework from that experience — not from a textbook. She developed sensory-safe aromatherapy products because she needed them herself. And she's launching Sensory Justice because the system needs to change, not the patient.

Lived experience isn't anecdote. It's evidence.
